Crunchfish spreads the word at AWE EU in Munich October 19-20, about the advantages of gesture control and proximity solutions when using AR smart glasses in the industry.
The two-day conference is held for the second time in Europe and attracts 1,500 attendees, 100 speakers and 100 exhibitors.

AR is bringing superpowers to people and will drive efficiency gains, economic growth, democratize healthcare and education, and promote sustainability in the world. Crunchfish’s contribution, primarily focused on the industry segment, is to offer an interaction based on human conditions.

The first day’s impression is that there is a high interest in human centric interactions with AR-devices, something that was confirmed by both the large number of people showing up in the Crunchfish booth and pointed out in various presentations held during the day. Gesture control is the natural interaction method when wearing smart glasses, allowing a more efficient, comfortable and immersive way to interact.

A shared view among many attendants is that the progress within AR is rapid. The AR-paradigm shift will come faster than previous tech-paradigm shifts. The impact on companies operating in highly competitive markets will be massive, offering new and agile competitors an advantage while presenting substantial challenges for traditional conservative players. A rapid changing landscape is in the favour of companies like Crunchfish who is already positioned in the frontline of the technological development.

Experience the possibilities of gesture control and contextual awareness at AWE Europe at the Crunchfish booth

Designing for immersive environments is fundamentally different from designing for 2D screens. Content is all around you and your whole body becomes the interface. These interaction challenges increase the demand for user friendly and efficient ways to engage with mobile and wearable devices.

At AWE Europe, Crunchfish will show how to interact with digital interfaces in a more natural way using gesture control. Our mobile proximity technology enables contextual awareness, securing information relevance and efficient information exchange based on physical presence and closeness.

Natural and intuitive interaction
Since AR and VR devices are designed to be used without tangible interfaces, traditional interaction methods no longer apply. Gesture control lets you engage with AR and VR environments in a direct way, making interactions more fluid and immersive.
Crunchfish has many years’ experience of UX design from gesture interaction projects. Our software is used e.g. in AR smart glasses and VR headsets to navigate content and control tasks.

Contextual awareness
Managing context dependent information means you can provide the right information, at the right time, in the right place and to the right people, securing information relevance and efficient information exchange. Crunchfish provides applications with an intelligent proximity layer that adds awareness of who and what is present in real time. This contextual awareness enables you to discover others nearby, communicate instantly and to share information. Our software creates innovative solutions for e.g. context independent information in AR smart glasses.

At AWE Europe you can try out the following Crunchfish demos

  • Visual Assist in AR smart glasses
  • 3D interaction in a VR context using Tango and ToF camera
  • 3D interaction for mobile AR using ARCore

Welcome to visit us in booth 325 to discuss the possibilities of gesture interaction and contextual awareness.

New US patent within gesture control strengthens Crunchfish’s patent portfolio

First North-listed Crunchfish has, by the United States Patent and Trademark Authority (USPTO), been granted patent for activation of the mobile camera when mobile passive sensors detect predefined changes in light conditions. The patent allows for activation of the camera using passive sensors. The patent with number US9733763 will be the company’s fifth US patent in the touchless interaction area. The patent is valid in the United States until April 2034. Previously, a corresponding Swedish patent has been granted. Patent applications have also been submitted to Europe and China.

Crunchfish has a comprehensive IP-portfolio that includes about twenty patents across the two main business areas of gesture control, called Touchless Interaction, and mobile proximity functionality, which we refer to as Connected AR as it is a form of augmented reality.

Crunchfish’s IP patent process has the following main steps:

  • Create priority by submitting the first patent application in Sweden.
  • Analyse review report from patent authority.
  • Submit an international PCT patent application within 12 months if the patent review is positive.
  • Submit national patent applications, within 30 months from the initial filing date, in the most important markets such as Europe, the US and China.

This recently granted patent has priority from the filing date in Sweden on April 11, 2013 and the company has previously been granted a patent in Sweden for the same invention. In parallel with the U.S. application, national patent applications have also been submitted to Europe and China. In these two markets, the review is still ongoing because each national patent authority makes its own decisions. However, the likelihood of a favourable outcome of patents in Europe and China has increased, as the application has already been granted in Sweden and the US.

The value of the company’s patent portfolio has been significantly strengthened in the last year. Several patents have been granted in the United States, and in one case China, and most of the patent applications in the company’s other technology area, Connected AR, have been reviewed and granted patents in Sweden. For these applications, international PCT applications have been submitted and in some cases the nationalisation phases have been initiated, as thirty months have elapsed since the initial filing date.

Crunchfish’s patent portfolio
Crunchfish has, nationally and internationally, 57 active patents and patent applications within two technology areas – touchless interaction and augmented reality. There are 11 unique touchless interaction inventions, of which 10 have been granted patents and 15 unique augmented reality inventions in of which 9 have been granted patents. The company owns all its patents and patent applications without limitation.

Crunchfish’s strategy is to protect the company’s technology in all geographic markets deemed to be of importance. Crunchfish intends to extend its patent portfolio continuously to selected markets and through new inventions in both gesture control and augmented reality.
