Crunchfish announces early US Digital Cash patent

2022-03-02|

Crunchfish Digital Cash AB (“Crunchfish”) has received a patent grant from the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) regarding sharing content between devices over internet or cellular communications having first established proximity using short-range communications. This patent applies to any content such images and sounds, but also financial transaction data such as Digital Cash messages, financial tokens and cryptocurrencies. The patent application number is US 11 201 912 and is valid until February 2036. This application has previously been granted in Sweden.

The scope of the patent is sharing content between devices that are detected to be in proximity by short-range communication, such as NFC, BLE, ultrasound or QR-scanning and then sharing data over internet or cellular communications from the device to other devices.

This is an important grant for Crunchfish because the scope is very wide, its priority date dating back in 2015, and the patent protects sharing content such as images and sounds, but also financial transaction data such as Digital Cash messages, financial tokens and cryptocurrencies”, says Joachim Samuelsson, Crunchfish group CEO and one of the inventors behind this patent.

Digital Cash messages is the topic on Friday March 4th, 2022 at 08.00 CET / 12.30 IST in the Survival of the fittest webinar series. It will also provide an overview of Crunchfish patents and patents pending within Digital Cash.

Crunchfish Digital Cash with V-Key webinar

2022-02-18|

The webinar on Crunchfish Digital Cash with V-Key was the 7th of the Survival of the fittest webinar series. After a presentation by V-Key’s COO Raymond Lee, Johan Wester moderated a Q&A session and an open forum with Patrik Lindeberg, CEO of Crunchfish Digital Cash and Joachim Samuelsson, Group CEO of Crunchfish as panelists.

V-Key is Singapore based company that has developed the world’s first virtual secure element, V-OS. It is a secure sandbox that is embedded within a native iOS or Android mobile app, and creates a safe operating environment where data is stored, and cryptographic processes can be executed in isolation from the rest of the mobile app. Crunchfish Digital Cash maintains a balance as well as a log of all transactions. As this is sensitive data it must be maintained with banking grade security. This is accomplished offline by V-OS that handles cryptographic keys, the Digital Cash balance and transaction logs.

Crunchfish and V-Key became partners to develop a joint offering in July 2020. A year later Crunchfish Digital Cash offline Trusted Application was ready for shipment within V-OS Virtual Secure Element. Crunchfish and V-Key announced in Q4 2021 a co-operation to market Digital Cash in Southeast Asia, the world’s fastest growing region for e-Wallets.

Crunchfish CEO Joachim Samuelsson made an interview with V-Key CEO Joseph Gan in the Cash goes digital – a payment pandemic series that provides more detail of V-Key’s technology and Crunchfish Digital Cash.

Crunchfish writes down Blippit shares

Crunchfish Digital Cash is the future of payments and adds multiple benefits to banks and payment service, regardless of payment rail. Crunchfish sees potential in Blippit as an integral part of Digital Cash, but it does not warrant a dedicated team or focus. Crunchfish has therefore decided to write down the value of Blippit AB shares on Crunchfish’s balance sheet.

Blippit AB is a joint venture between Crunchfish AB and ClearOn AB. Blippit AB has exclusive rights until year-end 2023 to sell Blippit app terminal in relation to mobile payment apps to POS terminals. Blippit app terminal easily integrates into any kind of payment app and POS terminal and is an integrated part in the Crunchfish Digital Cash platform.

Crunchfish continues to see potential in Blippit, but mainly as an integral part of Crunchfish Digital Cash platform. Hence, sales of the Blippit app terminal will not have a dedicated focus going forward but be offered as an add-on product that integrate mobile apps with POS terminals. Crunchfish has therefore decided to make an extraordinary write-down of the share value of Blippit AB in Crunchfish balance sheet to zero. This has a one-time negative impact of SEK 7.6 million on Crunchfish’s Q4 2021 financials.

”We are very proud to have developed the world’s first app terminal, which now has become an integrated part of the Digital Cash platform. However, as we do not intend to focus on sales of Blippit app terminal specifically, we have decided to write down the value in Crunchfish’s books”,  says Joachim Samuelsson, CEO of Crunchfish AB.

2022-01-27|

Crunchfish Digital Cash AB (“Crunchfish”) has received an International Preliminary Report on Patentability (IPRP) in Chapter II of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) for its initial Digital Cash patent application PCT/SE2020/051251 indicating that all claims 1 – 44 are deemed patentable. A patent if granted is valid until January 2040, 20 years from the original filing date.

At the moment of payment the transaction is digitally signed by the payer and transmitted locally to the payee as a message providing the payee with a digitally signed commitment, similar to a guaranteed check. If both parties are offline at the moment of payment, settlement will take place later when one of the parties has internet connection and access to the payment service’s back-end. All the transactions are logged locally by both the payer and the payee. It debits the payer’s Digital Cash offline balance and could either credit the payee’s Digital Cash offline balance or demand that the incoming payment is banked before it may be used.

”It is extremely pleasing that our very first Digital Cash patent application for offline payments receives such a clean slate on patentability. This is strategically important for several reasons; the patent application has an early priority date and a very wide scope. It also raises our expectations that our many other Digital Cash patent applications may also be granted later, as they are based on the same core principles”, says Joachim Samuelsson, CEO of Crunchfish.

This clean report of the initial Digital Cash patent application follows the announcement of the first granted patent regarding interoperable offline payments in December 2021.
