A third of all food produced in the world is thrown away. This is very costly and has a huge negative impact on our planet. Reducing food waste by half before 2030 is one of the United Nations’ sustainability goals. We rescue food by providing POS rewards to consumers for making environmentally friendly purchase decisions.
Society must meet the needs of today without risking the ability of coming generations to meet theirs. United Nations have set an ambitious agenda with 17 Goals for an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable development. This requires that we reduce our ecological footprint by changing the way we produce, purchase and consume. Halving food waste by 2030 is UN Goal 12.3.
Crunchfish has developed a patented concept for dynamic pricing that is based on individual properties of the merchandise, such as best-before-date and batch number. By using the new GS1 Digital Link-standard which is able to represent more information than the article number, it is possible to automatically reward the consumer at the point of sale for making climate friendly choices.
“Consumers generally pick the most fresh product from the shelf. With the new GS1 digital link standard the customer can be rewarded instantly at checkout for making climate conscious decisions.”

Crunchfish has taken on the challenge with food waste through our innovative concept for dynamic pricing. There are several positive aspects to applying a dynamic pricing of goods – there is an important climate aspect as it may significantly reduce food waste. There are also economic incentives for the FMCG industry by engaging consumers through discounts.
Dynamic pricing of an item means that the item is priced based on its individual characteristics such as production date, best-before date or batch number. The solution is based on the GS1 Digital Link standard and is based on a method for which Crunchfish received a Swedish patent in 2020.
We provide an automated way for the FMCG industry to give consumers a discount at the checkout if they do not casually choose the freshest product. Everything is based on the fact that the striped EAN barcode on goods in the near future will be replaced by a two-dimensional code (QR, DataMatrix etc), in which you can also represent individual information for the product, such as its best-before date. Dynamic discounts can then be given on older goods, and this will in turn affect our buying behaviour and reduce food waste. Simple and ingenious.
